Loose stool

Yesterday I called a mom back of a 6 week old.  The call was about stool being loose and leaking out of the diaper.  While we chatted the baby is breastfed so loose stool is totally normal, he is having same number of stools but now they leak out of the diaper.  Mom was worried maybe there was a problem.  During our conversation when there seemed to be no evidence of infection, I asked the mom what size diaper her 6 week old son (who was 8 pounds at birth) was wearing.  "He in newborn diapers still."

And there was the problem!!!  Poor little guy still squeezing into newborn diapers at 6 weeks of age - I imagine he's probably 10 pounds by now.  The package for newborn diapers says up to 10 pounds but come on!

Gently and calmly I advise "You know, he is eating so much more than when he was born and pooping so much more, he is probably ready for size 1 diapers now."

First Post

For a really long time I have been wanting to start this blog.  Many days driving home from the office, I would be mentally composing posts about funny conversations with new parents and incidences that I wish I had a place to record and share.  Well, yesterday I had another moment and realized now was the best time to start.

My first job as a professional is a Physician Assistant.  I have been a PA for 10 years now.  However, my main job in life now is being a mom to two beautiful little girls.  Through the years I have learned a lot about medicine from books and the clinic, but I probably have learned the most by being a mom!  Often I think back on how I react to situations now versus 6 years ago before I had my own children.

So hope this journal brings a smile and maybe even a laugh with the daily ins and outs of being a medical mom.
